Trump Administration Issues Memorandum on Supply and Delivery of Water in the West

October 23, 2018

The Trump administration on Oct. 19 released a "Presidential Memorandum on Promoting the Reliable Supply and Delivery of Water in the West" that calls for streamlining environmental review of major western water projects to improve water deliveries through the Central Valley Project, Klamath River and Columbia River systems.

“We support the memo’s intent to find opportunities for greater efficiencies within the current regulatory environment,” said ACWA Executive Director Timothy Quinn. “There is an upside to expediting decision making at the federal level. But however that is accomplished, it needs to ultimately align with achieving the coequal goals of improving water supply reliability for the state while protecting, restoring and enhancing the Delta ecosystem.”

The coequal goals have remained a central tenet of California water law since the Delta Reform Act of 2009 and are a consistent part of longstanding ACWA policy, which calls for a collaborative approach that includes all stakeholders.

“We look forward to working with our partners on the federal and state level to build a sustainable, reliable and environmentally responsible water future that works for all Californians,” Quinn said.
